The political season in Kenya is finally coming to a close. Months of upbeat campaigns and colourful advertisements plastered on billboards and posters on roadsides and across our cities and towns. There is no doubt. The display of persuasive faces and slogans has enlivened our daily lives. Imagery is a powerful tool of expression and identity. It paints a picture of the person and their personality and breathes life into the visible and invisible. Imagery means everything to any publicity mission.

A combination of professional photography skills is needed to capture and produce images for publicity billboards. The photographer’s creativity is in the bull’s eye more than ever. They have no option but to capture the most precise shots that emphasise personality and emotion in the best way possible. The lighting used must not interfere with the details. A simple but catchy background is preferable. The photographer must create a rapport with the client to boost their confidence and morale before the camera. It not only eases their nerves but also accentuates the liveliest side of their personality—something a consumer of billboards wants to see. The resulting high-quality images are an impressive array of portraits that define and endorse the political player in a thousand words.

Kawanjiku
Kiambaa MP and candidate, Hon. John Njuguna Wanjiku (Kawanjiku). A good publicity portrait for billboards should capture emotion and personality in the best way possible. It should capture and breathe life into the visible and invisible, connecting a person to their supporters.
